Fuel prices are highest since 2014.
As Americans hit the highways for the traditional start of the summer driving season over Memorial Day, motorists will see the highest gasoline prices in seven years. Fuel demand has risen as the rates of coronavirus vaccinations increase.
The American Automobile Association reported the average price of retail gasoline is about $3.04 per gallon nationwide. They estimate that more than 34 million Americans will take to the highways between May 27 and May 31.
Prices at the pump had already increased earlier in May after a ransomware attack on Colonial Pipeline, the nation’s largest fuel pipeline, shut the system for days and stopped fuel supplies from moving across the U.S.
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy expressed concerns this week about the energy policies of the president’s administration. “Gas prices are the highest since 2014 — just as summer starts,” he said.
